Question: are demisexual individuals queer?

Answer: YES NOW FUCK OFF AND STOP IDENTITY POLICING.

Longer answer: seriously, yes, it’s a sexuality that falls outside the dominant sexual paradigm, therefore it’s queer. It falls on the gray-a spectrum. Don’t actually fuck off, I’m sorry I got angry and swore. Come back and let’s talk about this; put your questions and comments in my ask box, or express them via a reblog, and I promise to respond.

I really hate this classification and definition of queer.  Like, I really fucking do.  Queer is a harmful hateful slur that is used to dehumanize LGBT people.  It is never used to attack asexual people for being asexual.  Asexuality is not targeted by a campaign of homophobia and transphobia with the sincere intent of the eradication of LGBT people.  I understand that queer has quickly become this super neat political identity, but I am not queer because I’m not ~inside the dominant paradigm~ (whatever in the fuck that means), I’m queer because I’m gay.  Whether or not I desire to have all the sex or not doesn’t change the fact that I am the G in the LGBT, and it never will.

Look at it this way, if asexuality is suddenly queer then it might as well be fag, d*ke, and tr*nny too.  Because queer is all of those.  Queer was the first term used to attack us and used by a heterosexist society to mark us as different and worthy of hate.  It is a word that is still used during vicious assaults against LGBT people, because in this day and age queer is still a slur.

Queer is a slur.  An asexual person cannot reclaim it on the basis that they are asexual.  They may do so if they are homo/bi/pan oriented and/or trans*, but not if they are either a/hetero/etc.  Especially not if they are cis hetero ace.  I refuse to allow this slur be used to refer to cistraight anybody.  Too many LGBT people have died, are dying, and will die at the hands of cis hetero people.  Fuck no will I ever allow anyone who is cis and hetero claim identity to a word that their community uses to oppress LGBT people.

Call me an un-hip anti radical all you want, but I simply will not abide by the egregious appropriation of a slur that has never affected that group.  Which is what this really is: appropriation.  My personal stand-by comparison is if a non-black person tried to identify as the n-word.  Especially if this non-black person was also white.  These words mean things, and as far as I’m concerned slurs can and should only ever be reclaimed by members of the group(s) which those slurs target.  If you are not targeted by that slur, then do not identify under that slur.  It’s not identity policing, it’s asking for some respect and understanding when discussing issues involving hate filled slurs.

And I guarantee you that I’m not the only queer person who feels this way.  We have every right to restrict access to our community, as well as the right to police the borders to our identity.  Many of us are still struggling with the very thought of accepting ourselves as queer, and I’ll be damned if some relatively privileged cis hetero asexual kid starts pinning a slur that never targeted them onto their chest as a badge of ~weirdness~ and ~abnormality~ without ever once taking the time to consider the sort of vile shit that actual queer people go through on a daily basis.  I simply refuse to allow that to happen.
